Hot Topic Tuesday: Migraine Triggers

So as I have mentioned before I have killer migraines. Last weekend, I was down and out with one, even yesterday I had one most of the day. They seem to come in 3-5 day spurts and nothing eases them up :(
Yesterday I decided enough was enough, and I decided to do more research and try a little harder to figure out what could be triggering them. I had a couple suggestions on Facebook and one of them was to drink lots of water. I must admit I am horrible at drinking water, sometimes entire days an entire day will pass by and I think "I haven't had any water today", bad news bears, especially for people trying to lose weight and work out. I decided my first step would be to drink lots of water.

I have also been doing really bad with junk food, I have been staying under my allotted calories for the day, but it has been filled with junk, no bueno. So you guys are my witnesses to my 2 new goals for this week:

1- Drink LOTS of water (at least 100 oz per day)
2- No more processed/sugary foods

I am going to try these things this week and see how the migraines are, my next step is to cut back on dairy, but I really enjoy cheese :)

Question of the Day: How do you make sure you drink enough water during the day?


  1. I'm not so good with remembering to drink enough water, but I feel you on the migraines. I have a monster of a migraine right now. I am literally counting the minutes until I leave work (24) and I can go home. Do you take anything for the pain? I haven't found anything that works.

  2. When I went to the Neurologist for my migraines, he said that I needed to drink A LOT of water, like 20 ozs with every meal at least and then drink it between meals. I am just like you, horrible at drinking water!!!! He also told me that I needed to up my salt intake, you can't just drink water and not eat salt or it won't help anything. I usually snack on goldfish and things like that. I have definitely noticed a difference since I started doing this.
    Have you thought of going to the Dr. to get on meds? I am now on a medicine that I have to take daily for migraines.
    Hopefully you start to feel better, migraines are horrible.

  3. I have these same problems.. I can go days without drinking water and I eat tons of things that I'm not supposed to. Horrible!

    I have found that if you have huge water bottles where you label times on (like drink to here by...) that it reminds you to do so and you'll get the amount of water you need during each day! :)

    I haven't really every had a migraine so I don't really have any tips for you on that one, sorry! Hope you feel better soon!

  4. I am so guilty of the forgetting to drink water thing too. I am a coffee addict! So I started filling up a large(ish) water bottle in the morning when I filled up my coffee cup and I don't allow myself to get another cup of coffee until the water is finished (the two cups sit beside each other so I don't forget!) It has helped a lot!

  5. The thing that helps me drink a ton of water is having a cup that I love. Find one that works great for you, and go from there. I prefer the insulated tumblers with the plastic straw. I'll grab one of those and just drink all day. Or a reusable water bottle. As long as you can find a great cup, it's easy to drink lots of water!

  7. I am horrible at drinking water as well. For some strange reason, I will drink more water out of a water bottle than I will a cup.

    Have you ever tried going to the chiropractor for your migraines? I find that if my neck is out, even just a little bit, I get these horrible, horrible migraines. I find by going once a month, all my bones stay happy and the migraines mostly stay away.
