High Five For Modern Medicine

This week has been a whirlwind, literally I am surprised that I am still alive and breathing. I am linking up with Lauren at From my Grey Desk for High Five For Fridays

1- I finished all my homework for finals ( 7 page paper, 2 assignments, and 1 field trip write up)

2- I reached a new blog goal 150 followers whoop whoop (think Baby Mama birthing class, start about 35 seconds in)

3- My little sister Gabi went halfway around the world to San Diego for college. Full-ride scholarship to USD baby, oh yes!!!! I am so proud of her, but I am counting down the weeks until family weekend (6 to be exact)

4) Most of all this week High Five for Modern Medicine

Last night I was tired and I knew all my homework was due today, so I decided to just bust it out. I figured even if I went to bed at 2 AM I would sleep better knowing it was done.

As I was pushing through my paper I heard Lulu coughing really bad so I went to check on her, and she was having a really hard time breathing. We had to take her into the ER and she turns out she has croup. 

I am so grateful that we were able to get her the medicine she needed and she is still sick, but she can breathe well. So modern medicine high five to you, because 100 years ago this could have been a whole 'nother ball game.

Massive Panic Attack

This school year my S is going to Pre-K, at the same school I went to and she is thrilled! I on the other hand am having a
Massive Panic Attack
Let me start by saying I have anxiety issues, so this is really throwing me for a loop. As if my panic wasn't exaggerated enough, we got a letter from her school that Pre-K is ALL day and not half day like I thought...

I know I should be excited because she is going off to school, she will learn, I will have 2 kids instead of 3, but I am not :(

She also has to wear uniforms, which consist of khaki or navy pants or skirts, yellow, navy blue or white collared shirts and closed toe shoes. Easy shopping right? Yes, but this little girl has too much pizzaz to be stifled by these wardrobe restrictions. She chooses outfits like this on a daily basis...






Deep down super way deep inside I know she will be fabulous and LOVE school, it's me I'm worried about, but I too will be fine.

Onto a funny story starring miss S. We were all laying down yesterday and she said
"Lulu do you know how babies get in tummies?"
I was intrigued so I listened in
"You eat babies, and swallow them, but don't chew and they get in your tummy. Good thing they are tiny as ants so you won't choke!" 

Obviously we have some talking to do, but since she is just 4 we will stick with the eating babies theory for now.

Now let's get back to talking about this design, my design was custom made for me by Sarah Darr of Family Darr Designs. For reals though isn't it gorgeous? Sarah was a dream to work with, she got everything I wanted in my design. If I didn't like something, she made a new example and sent it to me for approval (we exchanged over 30 e-mails and she was nice, never annoyed that I wanted to try a different color or font). Sarah listened to what I wanted, and she got my design practically perfect with 1 try! Sarah Darr is a truly amazing blog designer.

Date Night, Service Saturday and a Wedding

This weekend (and the days leading up to it) I was feeling a little sorry for myself...so my kind loving hubby decided we should have date night. We have not been out (without kids) for too long. We saw the Dark Knight and went to dinner, that movie was freaky! I scared myself by going to the bathroom halfway through, big mistake.

We managed to take a couple pictures of ourselves...As you can see we are true picture-taking professionals.


 On Saturday I determined the only way to get out of my "funk" was to help other people, I needed to shift the focus from myself. We took food to a person who is camping out (has no place to live right now), visited someone from church and did some other family fun things, here are some pictures from our adventures.

The lady we visited keeps jewelry in a drawer for little people to play with and naturally they loved it.





The wedding reception was very special because we saw a family that was in South Dakota when Milton was on his mission and then they moved about 30 minutes away from us. We have not seen them 2 times and they have never met our girls.

 It was an awesome reunion, which unfortunately I do not have pictures of :/





On a side note my girls sat on the couch for 27 whole minutes while I worked out (and through a shower), so I consider myself very lucky.

These Are My Confessions...

So I am in my last week of class for the summer, then I get a whole month off woop woop! I have a 8 page paper, an assignment and a quiz due next Monday that I have not barely started...remember my post about procrastination? Well...I have to finish it before this weekend, we have a wedding, a stake service project, a birthday party and it's my Gabi's last weekend home before college. Needless to say I will have ZERO free time this weekend! The point is, I will be semi-absent from the blog this week, but please keep reading, pinning, and commenting because I truly LOVE it all. I will see you when I come up for air :)

Before 5 Wake Up Time

My dear lovely Charlotte has been waking before 5 AM daily (don't ask me why, I don't speak baby) and because she is so mobile now (and in our bed) I cannot just doze off back to dreamland, because then she will pull herself up on the headboard and climbing over us...you get the picture

So for the past week we have been going out to the couch, where I will nurse  her and she will play for about an hour, then I lay her in the crib and she goes back sleep. Plot Twist: We share a room with her, so I can't go back to sleep, or she won't, obviously I choose her sleeping over me. Needless to say I have been starting my day at 5:45 AM, and yesterday I decided to embark on a new workout journey. I started...





Let me just tell you right now, she is.no.joke. I was thinking, "pffft 20 minutes, easy peasy" Boy was I WRONG! This workout will have you sweating the entire time, and afterwards I could barely walk down the stairs. If you are looking for a jump-start, or a reboot check this out. Awesome Easy Peasy Refrigerator Pickles

I LOVE pickles, they literally one of my favorite things to eat, in this entire world!! I love all kinds of pickles, but homemade ones are my favorite. Now it has been over 95 degrees here in Oregon for  forever  the last  few days and my cucumbers have been growing like crazy town, so naturally I wanted to make pickles, isn't that all you use cucumbers for too? Oh what's that you say, you don't? It must be just me. Anyways, this extreme heat and canning do NOT mix, I do not have air conditioning and I have an extreme intolerance for heat, like I seriously hate it more then most things on this earth.

I was browsing through Pinterest the other day and I found this gem yes you read correctly, refrigerator pickles (you will want to pin this one). No heating up a vinegar-y brine, no canner most importantly no added heat. I was in, so I went out and harvested the daily 5 cucumbers and the girls and I went to work. This took like 10 minutes (probably would have been a little less without 3 sets of hands involved), so it was simple and quick my favorite kind of cooking :) Just so you know I halved the recipe, because I only had a 1 quart jar. 

I do not have a nice camera, so please excuse the photo quality, and go make yourself some pickles!

 All the ingredients (minus the baby hand)
1 Cup vinegar (distilled white)
1 Cup water
2 tsp kosher salt
1 Tbsp white sugar 
Red onion thinly sliced
3 Garlic cloves (peeled and smashed)
4 Medium cucumbers
*The original recipe calls for fresh rosemary sprigs, but I didn't have any so they weren't in mine


Slice the cucumbers into spears and thinly slice the red onion

Stuff the cucumbers into the jar (vertically). I say stuff because it should be a pretty tight fit


Stir the sugar and salt into the vinegar/water mixture until they both dissolve, stir until you can't feel any more grittiness in the liquid. I am not even sure if that is a word, but apparently it works because my spell check didn't red line it :) Then add the onion slices and garlic cloves


Pour the brine mixture over the cucumbers, put the lid on the jar and refrigerate for 24 hours before enjoying :)


The original recipe says these will last a month. In my house I will be lucky if they last a day, next time I should probably make some more...

Update

Here is the bi weekly update

I broke my foot on Monday, so that has stopped exercise this week, but I have still lost... (drum roll please)
1.2 pounds!!
This proves that what I eat matters! I have lost this weight just by eating 1500 calories a day and eating good foods. I am happy and hopefully next week I will be able to workout and see a bigger number :)

Niche-Blogging

I have a concern about my lil' ol' blog...I read once that it is very important that your blog has a 'niche and I fear that I may be faced with an angry mob if every post is not centered around healthy living/weight loss. I am sure this is completely irrational, but you see when you have no my self-esteem you easily think people don't like you for weird reasons, and 99% of the time these reasons are made up in your own head. So tell me irrational or not? I have decided to really focus in on my blog and make sure the giveaways and posts really stick with my 'theme' which includes:

*Family Life
*Healthy Living
*Weight Loss
I feel a bit frantic as I am starting out this blog, trying to get people to pay attention, but honestly if 20 people like it or 2,000 do I will still keep writing and being true to myself.

Bumps in the Road

There was a bump in on my road yesterday...I broke my toe(s)...I know no biggie right? WRONG! They don't really do much for broken toes and I can't walk without extreme pain. It is quite hard to run, when you can't even walk, in fact impossible. I had fully intended to start the couch to 5K program today, and now it has to wait, I am majorly upset!

I felt like this when it happened, only imagine a hurt foot not a hurt finger and I look a little different, but you get the point.


Why does it always seem when you get on the right track, everything gets in your way? I was doing good with my eating and exercising, and now I can't do much in the way of exercising. I am trying to keep my head up but it is hard :(

Also in the news, both of my girls got stung on the bottom of their feet last night by bees, within seconds of each other, yesterday could not have gotten much worse. Oh and did I mention, I fell at 9 am and hurt my foot, my husband did not get home until 4 PM. Extremely hard caring for 3 kids 4 and under when you can barely walk :/ Especially when 2 of them are screaming from bee stings...

On a side note: DO NOT stand on a rolling office chair to hang up a blanket so you can block the sun, it does NOT end well...

Weekend Update/Pictures

Sadly, there is no long written weekend update today :( I know please try and hold back the tears and utter disappointment. Instead I am linking up over at Silver Linking for the instagram link-up. So please enjoy the pictures!


I was starving on Saturday night, so I had some green salad, grandma's potato salad and half of a watermelon. I LOVE me some watermelon, it is pretty intense. When I was pregnant with my Sophia, my best friend was also pregnant and we used to always get together for barbecues, she would actually buy 2 watermelons and we would split an entire watermelon and give the other one to everyone else. We didn't have to share either, because we like a light sprinkling of salt on ours and no one else did, hehehehe. Seriously though, if you haven't tried salt on your watermelon, you should, um like now.

I grew these cucumbers from seed! I am so happy, I have only ever grown carrots and radishes from seeds so I am pretty happy. Look for a container gardening post soon, I just found my camera charger...

I drove my husband's car home from school and I found all my Tupperware in his car. I seriously was about to go buy more, glad I saved myself some $$$.
